They made history at the 2019 GEICO U.S. Figure Skating Championships.
Now, they've been crowned Team USA's Female and Male Athletes of January 2019.
U.S. champions
Alysa Liu and
Nathan Chen secured the fan-voted award for their performances in Detroit just a couple weeks earlier where they both captured the national title in commanding fashion.
Liu became the
youngest U.S. ladies champion after landing three triple Axels throughout the competition - a first by an American female skater. At just age 13, the California native broke the record previously held by Olympic champion Tara Lipinski for 22 years. Last year's U.S. junior champion, Liu won her first senior title with 217.51 points after a clean triple Axel in her short program and two - with one in combination - in her free skate. Following her big win, she appeared on the TODAY Show, NBC Nightly News and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Coming into Detroit with an undefeated Grand Prix Series, Chen easily
defended his title for the third consecutive time, breaking his own U.S. records to set the highest scores in both segments and total score. Taking into consideration the new +5, -5 Grade of Execution system, the Yale freshman earned 113.42 points for his short program, 228.80 for his free skate and 342.22 total. Chen became the first male skater to successfully defend his U.S. crown for the third consecutive time since Johnny Weir in 2006, while also setting a new record for the largest margin of victory at the domestic event with 58.21 points.
Chen is set to compete next at the 2019 ISU World Championships in Saitama, Japan, next month.
