Sixteen Americans will represent the United States at the ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix Final and the Junior Grand Prix Final slated for Dec. 8-10 in Torino, Italy. The 10 senior and six junior U.S. athletes will compete simultaneously throughout the weekend for the first Grand Prix Final competition since 2019 due to COVID-19.
Â
The Grand Prix Series Final will consist of the top six point earners in each discipline from the six Grand Prix and six Junior Grand Prix events in the 2022-23 season.
Â
In the senior events,
Ilia Malinin leads the way for Team USA as the top qualifier in the men's event after earning two Grand Prix titles – Skate America and Grand Prix Espoo. The 17-year-old will be making his Grand Prix Final debut in his first senior season and looks to keep Team USA's winning streak alive as
Nathan Chen won gold the last four times the event was held from 2016-19.
Â
Reigning World champions Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier will represent the United States in the pairs competition. The duo topped the podium at Skate America and the MK John Wilson Trophy to become the first U.S. pairs team to qualify since 2015.
Â
Joining Knierim and Frazier in Torino are teammates Emily Chan and Spencer Howe after their stellar performances at Skate Canada International and NHK Trophy, where they earned silver. The two will be making their Grand Prix Final debut.
Â
In ice dance, two U.S. teams qualified for the Grand Prix Final: Madison Chock and Evan Bates and Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker. This marks Chock and Bates' fifth Grand Prix Final appearance after clinching gold and silver at their Grand Prix assignments. The three-time Grand Prix Final silver medalists will look to add to their medal tally after earning silver in 2019, 2015 and 2014.
Â
Hawayek and Baker qualified for the Grand Prix Final for the second time. The duo will look to improve on their 2018 sixth-place finish at the event. They qualified with two well-executed performances at Skate America and Grand Prix Espoo, where they earned silver at both.
Â
Isabeau Levito was the sole U.S. qualifier in the women's discipline. The 2022 World Junior champion will make her Grand Prix Final debut after breakout silver-medal performances at the MK John Wilson Trophy and Skate America in her first senior season.
Â
In the junior event,
Lucas Broussard and
Robert Yampolsky will represent Team USA in the men's competition, while Sonia Baram and Daniel Tioumentsev and Cayla Smith and Andy Deng will skate for the red, white and blue in pairs.
Â
In his second season on the Junior Grand Prix circuit, Broussard went undefeated in his two events, winning gold in Poland and Italy to lock up the top spot in the Junior Grand Prix men's standings.
Â
Also joining Broussard in the competition is Yampolsky, who qualified with a fourth-place result in Latvia and a silver medal finish at JGP Poland 2.
Â
Team USA's pairs teams, both of whom competed for the first time internationally this season, qualified for the Junior Grand Prix final in second and third. 2022 will mark the first time Team USA has had two pairs teams qualify for the Junior Grand Prix Final since 2011.
Â
At the first Junior Grand Prix of the season, Baram and Tioumentsev and Smith and Deng earned gold and silver, respectively. Smith and Deng then topped the podium in Latvia while Baram and Tioumentsev secured bronze at JGP Poland 2.
Â
The 10 seniors and six juniors will start the competition on Thursday, Dec. 8, with the junior short programs and the senior pairs and men's short programs. Then continues Friday, Dec. 9 with the junior rhythm dance and women's free skate as well as the senior pairs free skate, rhythm dance and women's short program. The event concludes Saturday, Dec. 10 with the junior pairs free skate, men's free skate and rhythm dance as well as the senior men's and women's free skate and rhythm dance.
Â
The senior competition will be streamed live on Peacock beginning at 1:15 p.m. ET on Dec. 8. NBC will broadcast a recap show Sunday, Dec. 11, at 4 p.m. ET. The junior competition will be available on the International Skating Union's YouTube page.
