2023 is officially here and with the new year, comes the excitement of a fresh start.
It's the time when many set new goals and aspirations for the year, including our Team USA figure skating athletes. Below, some of the top U.S. skaters shared their New Year's resolutions for 2023!
Emily Bratti and Ian Somerville (Ice Dance)
Emily: My New Year's resolution is to cook more of my meals.
Ian: My New Year's resolution is to wake up earlier so I have more time to eat a substantial breakfast!
Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko (Ice Dance)
Christina: My New Year's resolution is to procrastinate less. I always wait until the last minute to do my schoolwork. Procrastinating less would make my life less stressful.
Anthony: My New Year's resolution is to cut the average time I use my phone daily by half. This will allow me to be more present and less dependent on my device.
Gabbie Izzo (Women)
For 2023, my goals can be summed up in just a few sentences. More than anything I really want to embrace all of the opportunities that are coming my way and do my best to learn from all of the experiences I have, both good and bad. Overall, I just want to keep learning, both on and off the ice. A nice warm cup of positiviTEA never hurt anyone either.
Katie McBeath and Nathan Bartholomay (Pairs)
Katie: My new year's resolution is to embrace challenges with more of an open mind to be able to move through them better. I learned this as I moved through the second half of this year with Nate's injury and our challenging first half to this 2022-23 season. I hope to take what I've learned into the new year and use it for whatever lies ahead. Also, to not hit snooze on my alarm in the morning so I give myself plenty of time to do all my morning activities before getting to the rink/work each day.
Nathan: My New Year's resolution is to drink less caffeine! Between early mornings and long days, I'm definitely a sucker for coffee and even the occasional energy drink. I'm going to try to cut it back to one cup of coffee a day!
Lorraine McNamara and Anton Spiridonov (Ice Dance)
[Our resolutions are to] go to bed earlier, drink less coffee, learn Italian (Lorraine) and explore new ways to volunteer/serve our community.
Maria Mokhova and Ivan Mokhov (Pairs)
We are really excited and enthusiastically looking forward to the new season because we are going to have a new program, new costumes and new lifts that we are already working on. This season is going really well for us. This was our first international season because we have been waiting for many years for Maria to be age eligible for international competitions. We have had great experience and consistent skates on the international competitions that we have been assigned. We are working hard toward great preparation for the new and upcoming season.
Eva Pate and Logan Bye (Ice Dance)
Logan's New Year's Resolution is to work-out on a more consistent basis to gain strength for both off-ice and on-ice training. Additionally, Eva wants to stay more active off the ice throughout the year. In their free time, Eva wants to read more of her book collection and Logan wants to spend more time learning another language, or picking back up with the French he learned from college. It's also Logan's resolution to take Eva out on more date nights at their favorite restaurants and spots around town.
Valentina Plazas (Pairs)
My New Year's resolutions on the ice are to improve our competition performances throughout each one next season and land a consistent triple flip and lutz! My resolutions off the ice are to learn how to speak a different language and begin to journal!
Audrey shin (Women)
My New Year's resolution is to learn new vegan recipes and meal plan/prep! I just started cooking for myself a little more instead of my mom although nothing beats her cooking!) and it's been kind of fun! I want to try and keep it up heading into 2023!
Anastasiia Smirnova and Danil Siianytsia (Pairs)
Our New Year's resolution is to try and put aside time and do what we can to give back to the people who have helped us in our career.
Bradie Tennell (Women)
One of my New Year's resolutions is to be better about texting people back. I'm a chronically bad texter. I try not to, but I accidentally leave people on read all the time - usually because I read their message and then get distracted by something else and forget to respond. I use the little notification bubble as a reminder, but if that's gone, then so is any hope of me responding.
Dinh Tran (Men)
I will be continuing my third year of mechanical engineering as well as starting my fourth year at CSULB so I would like to study hard and pass all my classes. I also have a goal of landing more quads so that I can be somewhat more competitive. My last resolution is to continue to fight and not give up, especially when challenges arise.
Ava Ziegler (Women)
My New Year's resolution this year is to give myself more credit for my accomplishments, and spend more time helping and encouraging younger skater.
