Pairs skating is a figure skating discipline in which a male and female skater team up to perform a variety of skills and movements together in unison.
Pairs elements include lifts, twist lifts, throws, jumps, solo spins, pair spins and death spirals, as well as step and choreographic sequences.
Pairs figure skating has been an Olympic discipline since the 1908 Olympics Games in London. It was also introduced at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in 1908. The U.S. has won six Olympic medals and 27 World medals in the pairs discipline.
Pairs is enjoyed by all ages. It is included in the Learn to Skate USA curriculum, nonqualifying and qualifying competitions as well as adult skating.
