Will You Marry Me?

In a fun and unexpected coincidence, two adult skaters propose to their loved ones on the same day

March 7, 2026, began like any other ordinary Saturday at a competition. The 2026 Eastern Adult Sectional Championships were underway in York, Pennsylvania, while the 2026 Pacific Coast Adult Sectional Championships were taking place in Spokane, Washington. But by the end of the day, it wasn't the skating that everyone was talking about — it was the marriage proposals. Two of them.

Let's start with the East Coast.

Daniel Donigan, a former contestant on RuPaul's Drag Race, made a bold impression when he took to the ice in the championship adult solo dance event at Eastern Adult Sectionals, dressed as his drag persona, Milk.

"I'm a world-famous drag queen," Donigan shared of his profession. "I'm a certified personal trainer and skating coach. I manage the U.S. flagship store for Extreme Cashmere in NYC. I'm happy to have returned to competitive sports, especially in such a supportive field like adult figure skating. If you find the things in life you love doing, please do them. And if you have the opportunity, combine them!"

To complement his bridal-themed free dance, Donigan wore a veil. But the most notable accessory was the one that was hidden.

"My costume designer, Jazzmint Dash, sewed in a darling ribbon with a clip to the underskirt of my costume that the engagement ring was attached to."

Veer Nanavatty, Donigan's partner of five years, spectated from the kiss and cry. After the performance, Donigan pulled out the ring, and Veer said yes.

"We had been talking about getting married for some time, and what is a better landscape to get down on one knee in full drag and ask the love of your life to marry you than a really cold ice rink in York, Pennsylvania?" Donigan said.

"Veer is an incredible man. Thoughtful and intelligent, handsome beyond compare, and he has never once cooked a meal that wasn't yummy!"

Speaking of cooking, chef Sean Ang had a similar weekend to Donigan.

At Pacific Coast Adult Sectionals, Ang competed in the adult gold emotional performance event, where they skated to "One and Only" by Adele. Ang co-choreographed the program alongside Nicole Popovich, and a proposal was always part of the plan.

"The ending, where I slide on one knee to my fiancé, has been a part of choreography since day one. I put that in!" Ang said.

Ang is the founder and chef for Deluxe Queer: a dinner party pop-up centered around queer community-building. They also work as a coach.

"I picked up skating when I was younger — mostly because my sister did it. I took 10 years off, then came back about four years ago. What was supposed to be just a hobby quickly turned into lots of testing, competing and coaching," Ang said.

They met their fiancé, David Cox, at a coffee shop nearly a decade ago.

"Our relationship has always been built upon trust, love, pushing each other to be the best person we can be and supporting each other's dreams," Ang said.

Audience members were deeply moved by Ang's display of love for their partner. They didn't just leave the competition with a fiancé — they also left with a gold medal, winning the event by nearly three points.

"It was surreal," they recalled. "I don't exactly remember what happened while I was skating. All of sudden, I was on the edge of the rink on one knee!"

Neither Ang nor Donigan knew about the other one's proposal until after the competitions ended.

"As queer people, we see what the current political climate is like and know that time might be of the essence in terms of legally being able to be married," Ang said.

"I can't speak for them out west, but we were recently inundated with a big momentous display of love on an ice rink — 'Heated Rivalry' [An HBO series].  Perhaps we couldn't help but want to feel that same immense joy with skates on our feet, too!"

Regarding future plans, Ang said, "We haven't started planning a wedding yet. We're going to wait a year to enjoy our engagement. We know it will be a big party."

"We're excited to have a simple wedding celebrating our love for one another," Donigan said. "Of course, the fashions are an exciting element of any celebration. Are four looks too many for one day?"
