"Some of my favorite memories of the 2019-20 season included team maneuvers with all the incoming freshmen. At the first competition of the season, many were nervous and unsure of how the event works, but it was so nice to see how as the event went on. They were so excited to skate and hear the cheering of their fellow golden bear teammates. Another adventure my teammates and I shared this past season was driving in the snow! Since many of my teammates (including me) are from California, I drove as it was snowing for the first time! Although it was a bit scary, we all made it back home safely to California in the end. I have had such an amazing season with my teammates, and I thank all of them for their friendship and support they have provided me these last few years."
- Alexandra Tien-Smith (UC-Berkeley)Â
"The Merrimack Figure Skating Team had an amazing year as we have grown so much. Our favorite memories are definitely the road to competitions. Whether it be practice ice or the van rides, there was constant laughter and enjoyment with our teammates. We loved singing at the top of our lungs at practices and constantly jamming to each other's programs. As we participated in the competitions both at NYU and MIT, we had more than 14 ladies compete, which was a first for us. We were extremely proud of all the athletes that competed for the team and more importantly for the first time ever! We can't wait for next season!"
- Isabelle Carter (Merrimack College)Â
"We can't believe another amazing season is already over, but we're so grateful to have had this time together. While UD Figure Skating made so many unforgettable memories this season, including becoming the first ever Southeast conference champions, our favorite moments from this year were the ones that were spent with our seniors. Their time on the team may have been cut short, but they will always be a part of UDFS. Wherever we all go, it'll always be a great day to be a blue hen. Although we wish we could have ended our season at the National Intercollegiate Final, we are keeping our heads held high and looking forward to what this team has in store for years to come."
- Hannah Gottfried (University of Delaware)Â
"This year, the University of Notre Dame's intercollegiate team grew to the largest it has ever been. Our favorite memory from this season was winter bootcamp leading into the Maize & Blue Match-Up. We all arrived at campus days before the semester was to begin. The freedom of no classes allowed us the time to spend all day being together, skating, having team workouts and eating meals and sharing bonding activities with each other. Bootcamp ended with us traveling to the competition. We grew so close over this time of intense training and bonding. It was incredibly hard after that weekend to return to our student life, missing the constant togetherness with our teammates. Our intercollegiate team members are very close and are lifelong friends. The 2019-20 season was one we will never forget!"
- Amanda Rensch (University of Notre Dame)Â
"This past year, our team was fortunate to experience so many highlights throughout the season. I think one of our favorite memories came from when we won high team maneuvers at UC-Berkeley. It showcased an incredible competitive milestone for our team considering how competitive the intercollegiate program has gotten over the years. We will always be so extremely proud of every performance each of our team members put out this season as they all helped us to qualify for the National Intercollegiate Final for the second year in a row!
- Kristen Stamm (University of Colorado – Colorado Springs)Â
"As the only competitive member of the Springfield College Figure Skating Club, my favorite memory from the 2019-20 intercollegiate season was meeting another solo competitor. It was exciting to get to connect on what it is like to be the only one competing from our schools and share some tips and tricks. We both competed and placed at the same level making the moment even more fun!"
- Julia McGourty (Springfield College)Â
"It was hard for our team to pick a favorite memory this year. Our team is more than a skating team; it's also our skating family. One of the best things about having this family is the support the skaters give to each other on and off the ice. Being cheered on at competitions through programs, being introduced as "representing Miami University" and gaining the courage to perform because of our team's encouragement are all memories that our team members share with each other. However, our favorite memory is hosting the Red Brick Classic – the first competition we have hosted in three years. We loved welcoming other schools to share our passion for skating and our beautiful rink for a weekend of amazing competition. Being the first competition for our region, we enjoyed kicking off another season and seeing all the new faces to intercollegiate skating this year!"
- Edith Liu (Miami University)Â
"My favorite memory from this season was celebrating placing in the maneuvers event after and finishing a long day of competition by running out and getting pizza for dinner. We were so excited I think we scared the workers there! We had such a fun night full of laughs!"
- Nikki Schipperijn (The Ohio State University)Â
"Our favorite memory of the season is winning our eighth consecutive Midwestern conference title. We are so proud of this season's 16 new team members who upheld the legacy our team has created since its inception in 2012-13. It represents another season of coming together, supporting each other, pushing outside of our comfort zones and achieving our goals while becoming better people on and off the ice. We are so thankful for the opportunity to be Bulldogs and to proudly continue the team's traditions created by our alumni."
- Ashley Carlson (Adrian College)
"The Northeastern University Figure Skating Club had an amazing season filled with so many great memories and firsts. From team dinners to volunteering at a local supper club and cheering on our fellow Huskies at varsity sports games to meeting Adam Rippon at his book signing and attending a cycling class taught by one of our coaches, our team is always having a great time together. Even now when everybody is home, we are continuing to hold virtual events.

This year, NUFSC competed at all three sectional competitions for the first time ever. With every competition, we filled more starts and earned more points for our team. At the MIT Intercollegiate Competition, the last one of our season, we filled all 30 of our starts, and for the first time ever, our team placed in the top six. Our team members love going to the intercollegiate competitions and cheering one another on. We are so excited to see so many of our teammates reaching their goals and performing absolutely beautiful programs.
Â
One last thing that we are incredibly proud of is our first-ever holiday show. We had so much fun preparing for this show and performing for a sold-out crowd full of our classmates, friends and family members right before finals stress began. The show was a huge success and we were able to raise over $900 that went toward team bonding initiatives as well as competition dues.Â
Â
NUFSC is so happy to have truly joined the intercollegiate skating community this year. We became a family and can't wait to see what our team will achieve in the seasons to come!"
 - Annabel Devault (Northeastern University)Â
"NUFSC had an amazing season filled with so many great memories and firsts. Two things that really stand out to us are our first holiday show and filling all our 30 starts at the MIT competition for the first time ever. Putting together the holiday show was a lot of work but also so much fun. Our team became so close as skaters worked on group numbers and promoted the show throughout campus. Seeing everything come together and watching everybody's solos and group programs was such a proud moment. MIT weekend was also amazing. We spent so much time together and practically lost our voices cheering all day, both days, for every one of our skaters. It was a great end to our most successful competition season yet!"
- Elizabeth Klemm (Northeastern University)Â
"This past season, Oakland University's intercollegiate team had an amazing opportunity to be able to host another competition for the second year in a row! It was a lot of work to put together at first, but by the end of the weekend, it was worth it because it seemed like everyone had a great time at GrizzFest. We are so thankful for the opportunity to host again. Although we have a variety of wonderful memories from this season, one of our most memorable is the night before Red Brick Classic. That Friday, the team met at the restaurant inside the hotel and had a team dinner. It was an enjoyable way to begin the season and prepare for the weekend ahead of us. The dinner was filled with a lot of laughter, happiness, and excitement for the days ahead! We couldn't be more grateful for the wonderful season we had this year and can't wait for next season!"
- Nellierae McCaslin and Brenna Sandles (Oakland University)Â
"Our team's favorite memory would be the Pioneer Open, our teams first competition. Collegiate skating is so different than mainstream skating. This competition was beautiful for multiple reasons. When a skater would fall, not only would our whole team cheer but all the other teams would cheer as well. It was such a community at the competition. Being one of the only visible teams without a coach was a bit unnerving but it only brought us closer together as a team as we were able to encourage each other."
- Victoria Jump (University of Northern Colorado)Â
"Our favorite memory this season was getting to compete together at our first collegiate competition! We got to jam out on the car ride while enjoying Dunkin' (a lot of Dunkin' was consumed that weekend). We made posters for each other and laughed the whole weekend. We had an amazing first competition together and can't wait for next season for another!"
- University of MaineÂ
"Our favorite memories are seeing old skating friends and competitors at intercollegiate competitions. Many of us didn't think we would have a chance to continue skating in college, so it's nice to see friends still skating and doing what they love in a new type of way. Additionally, we love getting to know people from different teams and catching up during the busy weekends to ask them how school's going. It's like a mini reunion at every competition!"
- Boston University
"This is a special moment for us because it was the first competition of the season, and this season we were able to form the largest individual competition team in the history of the Princeton Figure Skating Club (almost tripling in size from our team last year)!"
- Princeton UniversityÂ
"This season NYU Figure Skating made many amazing memories as a team, but the one that stands out the most is our weekend at this year's MIT competition, where we achieved many firsts. For the first time, we qualified for the National Intercollegiate Final. This was also our first time placing third at a competition, our highest finish ever. Finally, we won High Team Maneuvers, which was incredibly exciting. It is crazy to think that at MIT three years ago, when our seniors were freshmen, we earned only 11 points as a team. This year, we not only broke 100 points for the first time, but we earned a total of 127 points for the competition! We have accomplished a lot as a team on the ice, but it has been even more amazing to see our team become a real family."
- Emma Krinsky (New York University)Â

"This season has truly been a dream come true. If you were to go back in time to my freshman year and tell me that in four years CMU Figure Skating would be one of the top 16 teams in the US, I wouldn't have believed it. The growth in numbers and skill has been tremendous since then. In only four years, we went from having five skaters, no budget, and no recognition to being one of the most competitive club sports at our university. We have worked hard every single day to qualify for the Intercollegiate National Final and, even though the competition has been canceled, we are still so excited to be recognized as one of the best intercollegiate skating teams in the nation. I am so honored to have served as president for this amazing team and to have helped lead us to this huge accomplishment. CMU Figure Skating has definitely been the best experience I have had during my college years and I am so excited to see the team continue to grow after I graduate."
- Beth Rispoli (Carnegie Mellon University)Â
More 2019-20 intercollegiate skating memories will be featured in the May 2020 issue of SKATING magazine.Â
