On Monday, February 1, 2021, U.S. Figure Skating will invite people from around the United States to participate in the fifth annual National Get Up® Day presented by Guaranteed Rate. The day will be a celebration of those who embody the Get Up® spirit. On this day, people are encouraged to share their stories at WeGetUp.com, by using #WeGetUp or by contacting their local media outlet with their story, or the story of a friend or loved one, or an organization that is doing inspiring Get Up® work in their community.
Guaranteed Rate, one of the largest retail mortgage lenders in the United States, will also present the 2021 Get Up Virtual 5K, a nationwide celebration of strength and resilience and can be completed on or off the ice. Rather than racing against a clock or competing for the fastest time, participants are encouraged to complete the 5K in honor of someone or something that helped them through a personal Get Up moment. In honor of the 60th anniversary of the Sabena Flight 548 flight crash that took the lives of the U.S. World Team, all participants will be issued a 1961 race bib and all net proceeds will benefit the Memorial Fund. Registration is open through Feb. 26 and the race can be competed anytime during the month of February.
Additionally, Guaranteed Rate also sponsored a feature in each telecast during the 2021 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships that focused on a Get Up story based on U.S. Figure Skating's continued celebration of the Get Up spirit that is intrinsic to the sport.
U.S. Figure Skating will encourage media outlets around the country to share Get Up® moments throughout the day on February 1, whether connected to the sport of figure skating or not, through feature stories, pictures, videos, social media, etc.
February 1 marks the end of National Skating Month (January), when rinks across the country bring communities together to experience the joys and benefits of skating. The first lesson in skating is how to fall down, and more importantly, how to get back up again, a lesson all participants can apply across all aspects of their lives.
This national day of celebration is a legacy of U.S. Figure Skating’s Get Up® campaign.
