Nathan Chen and Jason Brown lead the way for Team USA after the first day of Skate Canada International in Vancouver, taking the top two spots in the men's event. The competition kicked off on Friday afternoon and will conclude on Saturday, Oct. 30.
Chen's 106.72-point skate topped the field and featured an opening quadruple Lutz and a quad toe loop-triple toe loop combination. The three-time and reigning World champion earned the bronze medal last week at 2021 Guaranteed Rate Skate America.
Brown is in second place, notching 94.00 points and the top program component score (46.61). He also received Level 4 marks for his three spins and step sequence.
Also competing for Team USA, Tomoki Hiwatashi placed 11th in the short program with 72.92 points.
Canada's Keegan Messing sits in third place with 93.28 points.
The U.S. women had a strong start to the competition with Alysa Liu in fourth place and Karen Chen in sixth. In her Grand Prix debut, Liu scored 73.63 points for her short program, which included a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination. The two-time U.S. champion made her senior international debut this season and has earned the gold medal at Cranberry Cup, Lombardia Trophy and Nebelhorn Trophy.
Chen collected 68.74 points to place sixth. She received Level 4 marks for her non-jumping elements and had the third highest program component score with 34.41 points.
Russians hold the top three spots with Kamila Valieva in first (84.19), Elizaveta Tuktamysheva in second (81.24) and Alena Kostornaia in third (75.58).
After the rhythm dance, Caroline Green and Michael Parsons were the top U.S. team, finishing fourth with 72.40 points. Their medley by Janet Jackson and En Vogue opened with Level 4 twizzles and closed with a Level 4 curve lift.
Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko are in eighth place after their performance to "Batdance" by Prince. Their 68.96-point rhythm dance included Level 4 twizzles and a Level 3 rotational lift.
Canada's Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier are in first place with 85.65 points. Italy's Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri are in second (78.82), and Olivia Smart and Adrian Diaz of Spain are in third (76.97).
In the pairs short program, Ashley Cain-Gribble and Timothy LeDuc placed sixth with a 61.68-point skate to music from The White Crow. Their program included a throw triple Lutz and Level 3 lift.
China's Wenjing Sui and Cong Han lead the pairs field with 78.94 points, followed by Russia's Daria Pavliuchenko and Denis Khodykin (69.46), and Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nolan Seegert of Germany (67.93).
