Hubbell and Donohue Qualify for Grand Prix Final with Silver Medal at Skate Canada International

Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue qualified for their fifth consecutive ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, winning the silver medal at 2019 Skate Canada International in Kelowna, British Columbia.

In the ice dance finale, Hubbell and Donohue scored 123.10 points to finish second in the free dance and second overall. Skating to music from A Star is Born, the reigning U.S. champions completed a set of Level 4 twizzles as well as a Level 4 straight line lift-rotation lift combination. With 206.31 total points, the Montreal-based team secured their 13th straight Grand Prix Series medal and punched their ticket to the Grand Prix Final in Torino, Italy.

Also hailing from Montreal, Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker finished fourth in the free dance and overall, scoring 115.25 and 194.77 points, respectively. Their free dance opened with three Level 4 elements, a stationary lift, set of twizzles and a curve lift-rotational lift combination.

Caroline Green and Michael Parsons moved up from eighth to seventh place overall with their free dance, notching 173.82 total points. The new team’s performance included five Level 4 elements and received 104.82 points.

Canada’s Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier claimed the title with 209.01 points, and Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson of Great Britain secured the bronze medal with 195.35 points.

Bradie Tennell finished fourth overall in the ladies competition with 211.31 total points. The 2019 Skate America silver medalist finished fifth in the free skate, landing five clean triple jumps in her 138.39-point program.

Reigning World Junior champion Alexandra Trusova of Russia won the ladies title (241.02), Japan’s Rika Kihira won silver (230.33) and the Republic of Korea’s Young You picked up the bronze medal (217.49).

Camden Pulkinen made a splash in his Grand Prix debut, finishing fourth overall in the men’s competition with 244.78 total points. The 19-year-old scored a personal best for his free skate, earning 155.73 points for his program that included a quadruple toe loop and six triple jumps.

Two-time Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan earned the title with 322.59 points, Canada’s Nam Nguyen grabbed silver with 262.77 points and Japan’s Keiji Tanaka won bronze with 250.02 points.

In the pairs competition, Alexa Knierim and Chris Knierim maintained their fourth-place position, finishing with 199.57 total points. Their free skate included three Level 4 lifts and a strong triple twist to earn 128.29 points.

In their second Grand Prix as a team, Jessica Calalang and Brian Johnson finished in sixth place, earning 119.00 points for their free skate for an overall score of 181.54.

Russia’s Aleksandra Boikova and Dmitrii Kozlovskii earned the gold medal (216.71), Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro of Canada claimed silver (208.49), and Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov of Russia won the bronze medal (202.29).
