Team USA to Team UCLA

Audrey Lu reflects on her transition from competing on an international stage for Team USA to representing UCLA as a collegiate skater.

“Representing the United States of America,” and “Representing UCLA” — these two phrases heard over the loudspeaker as I take the ice have given me a world of possibilities. I fell in love with figure skating at the age of 4 and continue to fall in love with skating every day. I am so grateful to be able to compete all over the world representing Team USA, and then continue doing what I love in college representing my dream school, UCLA. In this whirlwind journey of blades, books and beyond, the transition from the international stage to the collegiate skating arena has taken me on a series of adventures that I am forever thankful for.

As a Team USA figure skater, the constant travel representing Team USA at international competitions has allowed me to meet people from all over the world and experience different cultures while navigating diverse environments. Constantly competing around the world has taught me resilience, discipline and hard work. Because I had to frequently miss school due to travel and competitions, I’ve adapted to doing homework wherever and whenever I can — on the plane, in the hotel room, at the ice rink, etc.. Because of this, I am mentally and physically strong, and my heart is full of love, dreams and hard work.

Since I started college, joining UCLA Figure Skating has truly made my college experience memorable. I am most proud of my ability to adapt and thrive in new environments. As a student-athlete, the opportunity to continue pursuing my passion for skating while working towards my academic goals as a psychobiology major is so fulfilling. Whether it’s juggling between classes, exams, practices and competitions, or going from the early-morning practices to  late-night study sessions, I enjoy every single moment. My commitment towards athletic training and academic study has shaped me into the hard working, determined and passionate person I am today.Being a part of a collegiate team is like being part of a close-knit family. Competing with the support of UCLA Figure Skating is an indescribable feeling. Every time I step onto the ice, instead of the international competition scene filled with flags from different countries, the stands are filled with vibrant school colors and passionate student-athletes. Knowing that my teammates are the ones cheering me on the loudest and standing by my side every step of the way, whether it’s on the ice during a program or off the ice completing an assignment, gives me a sense of comfort and belonging. I am so lucky to be doing what I love with the most supportive, genuine, passionate and talented team.

I have also taken on a leadership role as the competition chair for UCLA Figure Skating because I want to give back and make a difference for the skating community. Drawing from my past experiences as a Team USA figure skater, I am able to help elevate the competition experience and create an environment where athletes are both comfortable and able to thrive. My job is to make sure everything is in order, including arranging hotels, ice time, flights and judges, as well as working with the team to put together a successful competition. Even though it is very time-consuming, especially when we are hosting the competition, it is so fulfilling to be able to give back to the sport that has given me so much. I can’t wait to continue using my passion and knowledge to make every experience as memorable as possible for all athletes and leave a lasting impact on the skating community.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to continue pursuing my love for figure skating while navigating being a full-time student at UCLA. I want to inspire student-athletes around the country that they can continue doing what they love while pursuing their academic goals. I am eager to utilize my visibility and connections to make a difference for the community and share my motto: Never give up. Keep chasing your dream. Whatever you do, do it with all your heart.
