Olympian Scott Hamilton recently brightened the day of students in his hometown of Bowling Green, Ohio.
On May 19, Hamilton delivered an inspirational message via social media during the morning announcements at St. Aloysius Catholic Elementary and Junior High School. In his message, the 1984 Olympic champion encouraged students to take care of themselves during this stressful time.
“It means so much to have someone of Scott's stature be so willing to inspire through prayer and motivation,” Tom Konecny said. Konecny is a St. Aloysius parent and volunteer on the parish committee.
In recent weeks, many celebrities have served as surprise guests to conduct the morning announcements, including former Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, University of Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh and Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh.
“I think it has been very inspiring for all of us during this unusual time,” Principal Andrea Puhl said. “It has given our students and families something to look forward to and the messages have all been so positive and encouraging.”
Having special guests like Hamilton have helped to uplift the entire community of St. Aloysius.
“We know they’re busy and have many demands on their time,” Konecny said. “To see each of them respond to our request, take the time to be with us and speak so lovingly about our school shows their true character. It just goes to show that people want to help during this pandemic.”
These gestures are particularly meaningful during times of uncertainty.
“Any parent will tell you that online learning has been difficult for a variety of reasons,” Konecny said. “To see a celebrity like Scott take the time to do this for us, and inject our routine with enthusiasm — it was a true blessing.”
