More than 75 of the country’s top Theatre on Ice teams head to Fraser, Michigan this week for 2023 National Theatre on Ice.
Nearly 1,300 skaters will compete across the four-day event June 27-30 at Big Boy Arena. Teams will compete for titles in eight divisions: preliminary, intermediate, novice, junior, senior, open, adult and adaptive.
The Ice House Skating Academy, which is home to the Harmony Theatre Company, will serve as the host club for the event for the first time. Harmony Theatre Company of Michigan goes into this year’s competition as the winningest team in the senior division with five titles, and they are looking to add a sixth title to their trophy case again this year.
Also eyeing the top step of the podium is the reigning champion, Forte of Boston, which has three gold medals.
Theatre On Ice (TOI) is a form of competitive figure skating that combines the grace of figure skating with the excitement of theatre and dance. Known as "Ballet on Ice" in Europe, Theatre on Ice teams consist of eight to 30 skaters on the ice telling a story together. TOI brings skaters together and gives athletes the chance to be a part of a team, travel locally and internationally, and make new friends.
Competition consists of two programs: a free skate and choreographic exercise. Teams are evaluated on technical elements as well as presentation with a specific emphasis on originality, costuming, artistry and musicality.
