At the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games, the United States finished second behind the Russian Olympic Committee in the figure skating team event with 65 points. The silver marked the best-ever result in the team event for the stars and stripes.

But in an unprecedented turn of events, the medal ceremony was postponed due to the revelation that ROC athlete Kamila Valieva tested positive for a banned substance. The International Olympic Committee then ruled no medals would be presented for the team event during the Games due to the ongoing investigation.

This is the first time in Olympic history athletes have not been awarded their medals on-site, meaning these athletes missed their opportunity to be recognized on the Olympic podium.

In the lead up to the one-year anniversary of the scheduled medal ceremony, U.S. Figure Skating officially launched its More Than Medals campaign to push for a resolution and to champion clean sport.

June 22, 2023 marked 500 days since the scheduled medal ceremony for the figure skating team event with no resolution in sight. The next day, the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs, Colorado, opened a “More Than Medals” exhibit featuring all nine empty Olympic medal boxes, serving as a reminder that the nine U.S. athletes had yet to receive their medals.

Team USA was named the winner of the team event after a nearly 300-day process involving proceedings around the positive drug test of ROC athlete Kamila Valieva. The International Skating Union announced its reorder of the medals, based on the Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision to disqualify Valieva's competitive results dating back to Dec. 25, 2021.
