Hiwatashi Takes Home Silver From JGP Canada

(9/15/18)—Tomoki Hiwatashi kicked off his fourth Junior Grand Prix series with a silver medal in the men’s competition in Richmond, Canada.

Hiwatashi, who took third at both of his Junior Grand Prix (JGP) series events in 2017, scored 213.24 points to finish second. He won the short program with 76.81 points, landing four triple jumps, including a triple Lutz-triple toe combination. In his free skate, Hiwatashi avoided deductions, but underrotated his opening triple toe, finishing in second place with 136.43 points. He landed nine valid jumps, including five in the second half of the program.

American Peter Liu finished 12th with 158.83 points. He was sixth after the short program.

In her JGP debut, Gabriella Izzo finished sixth in the ladies competition with a total score of 159.86. Izzo completed a 58.14-point short program, landing three jumps, including a triple Lutz-double toe combination, and three Level 4 spins. Entering the free skate in fifth place, the Boston native stumbled on a triple Lutz early on, but rebounded with three Level 4 spins and three jumps in the back half of the program to score 101.72 points.

In the ice dance competition, Eliana Gropman and Ian Somerville finished fifth, while Emma Gunter and Caleb Wein finished seventh. Gropman and Somerville, who won the bronze medal at JGP Slovakia earlier this year, finished with 141.55 points overall. Fifth after the short program, they were awarded three Level 4 elements, including two Level 4 lifts on Saturday in the free dance. Gunter and Wein, who were sixth in the short program, earned 135.78 overall points for a seventh-place finish. They received positive GOEs on every element.

Sarah Feng and TJ Nyman finished sixth overall with 134.05 points. In their short program, the Colorado Springs-based duo scored 52.17 points, including a triple twist and a Level 4 spin. In their free skate, the pair tallied a Level 4 triple twist as well as clean side-by-side triple toes to start the program. They ended the program with a Level 4 spin, ultimately earning 81.88 points.
