2014 Sectional Figure Skating Championships Begin Today

(11/19/13) - The 2014 U.S. Figure Skating qualifying season continues Tuesday, Nov. 19-Saturday, Nov. 23, with the Eastern, Midwestern and Pacific Coast sectional figure skating championships. More than 650 skaters in four disciplines (ladies, men's, pairs, ice dance) will compete in five levels (juvenile, intermediate, novice, junior, senior) at the three sectional championships.

The top four finishers in each discipline at each level will earn a berth to the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, which are set for Jan. 5-12, in Boston. This year, the 2014 U.S. Championships are the final qualifying event before the 2014 U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team is named.

Several members of the 2013-14 U.S. Figure Skating team envelope will compete at the sectional championships, including 2010 U.S. champion Rachael Flatt (Pacific Coast), 2012 Junior Grand Prix Final silver medalist Hannah Miller (Midwestern) and 2013 World Junior competitor Yasmin Siraj (Eastern). In 2013, Max Aaron, who went on to win the U.S. men's title, competed at the Midwestern sectional to earn his spot at the U.S. Championships.

Other members of Team USA have byes to compete at the U.S. Championships due to their placement at the 2013 U.S. Championships, their international competition schedule or their standing as a reigning Olympic medalist.

Live streaming will be begin at approx. 8 a.m. Saturday and go until 12:25 a.m. ET on Sunday. Sarah Hughes, the 2002 Olympic champion, and three-time U.S. champion Michael Weiss will host "Ice Desk Live" from the MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM) broadcast studios in Chelsea Market in New York. The duo will provide analysis and updates from each sectional, interview special guests and look ahead to the 2014 U.S. Championships and 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
