University of Delaware Ice Arenas

We had a wonderful National Skating Day on January 20th! I keep hearing back from people how much they enjoyed it, how do we start lessons, will we have it again........we had over 50 kids & parents playing with us that day!

We gave away and raffled over 40 items....including LTS class, Hockey class, public sessions, discounts for restaurant & pro shop, plus everything that was in our kit! In addition, we had a club consignment sale of used skates & dresses which was very popular and made some revenue for the club as well as for the seller!!! Plus these new skaters went home with skates & a dress!! We did not have media, for the reason, I wasn't sure if anyone would show up, because my manager said, in the past when other directors had tried it, no one showed!!! I told her she had the wrong director! LOL...However, next year we will have media & pictures!!! Also, we plan on having it again, January 19th, 2015!!! Kids and parents were off from school and work that day!!!

Here was a break down of our day:

8:30-9:00am - Registration

9:00-9:20am - Off ice warm up & safety tips

9:20-9:30am - skates on

9:30-10:00am - Tots classes on a third of ice using 2 coaches & 3 volunteers

10:00-10:30am - young teens/ Hky boys using a 1/4 of ice & 2 volunteers

10:00-10:30am - Adult group - which I personally taught and we had a lot of laughs and fun!!!(Gave out prizes for fun goals such as: Most creative, best facial expression, best knees, most graceful(gave to a dad)lol, most embarrassing to their child(we let their children judge that)....anyway, we had fun!!

10:30-10:50am - we finished our morning with 2 separate groups of doge ball!!! Where they get to chuck the ball at the instructors and volunteers!!!!

Coyotesice

We had a great time celebrating National Skating Month here at the Ice Den in Scottsdale, AZ. The Coyotes Figure Skating Club and the Learn to Skate Program, levels B1- Pre-Preliminary, teamed up to have a fun night of skating together.

The night included a hockey area, Bring A Buddy, the limbo, an egg race, bowling and skating with friends. The best part however, was the pile of snow that we dumped on the ice for all to play in. Adults, and skaters of all ages joined in the thrill of throwing snowballs on the ice. That is a pretty big deal when you live in a desert!

The response was great with over 80 participants for a night of FREE skating and fun!
What a great way to encourage skaters of all levels to learn how to skate and see what a fun sport skating can be!

The skaters and club had such a great time that we are so excited to do another fun, skate day to encourage the growth of skating here in the desert!

Thank you to all at US Figure Skating for providing the tools for the Club and our Learn to Skate program to use, to make this night here in Arizona, one to remember!

St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club and Canton Recreation Department

On a cold, winter day, January 18, 2014, the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club and Canton Recreation Department hosted "It's Great to Skate." Over 150 people attended including families and young college students.

We set up a welcoming table with the skating promotional items, the ice skating video playing and basic skills information. Decorated with the balloons and posters, the rink looked festive and fun. The event lasted for (2) hours and it was very busy the entire time. We had games, a raffle basket, a raffle for a skating snow princess dress with tights, face painting and entertaining music playing. The figure skating club, adorned with cowboy hats, put on an exhibition and line danced to "Cotton Eye Joe." Figure skaters were on the ice, assisting young skaters in Snowplow Sam skills.

The recreation director stated "We should do this once a month. This event is the busiest we have been all year". A skater told her Mom, "This was fantastic." Another Mom said, " My daughter is hooked. She wants to be a figure skater."

Great community event!

There were 150 skaters that participated during our evening of fun! Entire families enjoyed the skating which included three different group lessons by the Troy Skating Club professionals. A raffle was held with prizes from the NSM kits given away as well as two 6 week sessions of Basic Skills classes. The winners of those two Basic Skills classes have already begun skating in the session that began the very next week. Even though the weather was frightful outside, it was a wonderful skating event at Hobart Arena.

On the Ice Skating School

We held our National Skate Month Celebration on Saturday, 1/11/14. We had close to 200 participants. We offered a 1.5 hour free skate in the afternoon which included group lessons taught by 5 instructors. We also had raffles with the USFSA materials as prizes, skate gear flea market, on ice games and skate demos of hockey puck passing, figure skate jumps, spins and spirals. It was an enjoyable community event which brought out some new faces as well.

Seven Bridges Ice Arena

We did have our celebration last Saturday. We had a buddy skate for our skate school families and friends which went great. Our skaters brought their friends, siblings and of course mom and dad to get on the ice with to share their skating experience. They all had a great time skating together. After the Buddy Skate we had an open house so parents and skaters could learn more about our figure skating program and tour the facility.

Our coaching staff also gave free lessons on our public skate that day. The coaches were very busy giving our patrons skating lessons. The feedback from the lessons was very positive, it gave those taking lessons more confidence and they could relax and enjoy their skating experience. We have had several kids and adults sign up for classes as a result of the lessons!

Bill Collier Community Ice Arena

We had a successful event with nearly 50 students taking advantage of our free lessons during a busy open skate session. We had three instructors and divided by age and skating ability. Most were beginners and were thrilled to be able to move across the ice and learn swizzles. We had a group of six speedy boys that were able to take a more advanced lesson and one adult was learning back crossovers with our skating director by the end of her lesson. Our participants were very appreciative and we had many thanks from grateful parents.

City of Kettering
The City of Kettering hosted its 11th annual Absolutely Free National Skate Week Clinic this season! Due to this year being an Olympic year, we hosted two National Skate Week Clinic days. The first was before Christmas on December 18th and the second was a month later on January 15th. These 2 hour events included free lessons to the public, free skate rental, free open skate, free prize give-a-ways and free exhibitions from some of our basic skill skaters and the South Dayton Figure Skating Club including the Ice Force Synchronized Skating teams. We had information tables set up during our event for the South Dayton Figure Skating club, our City of Kettering Group Lesson information, and our Ice Force Synchronized Skating Team.

There were approximately 250 total skating participants during our Clinics. We offered free group lessons every 15min. A free open skate was also going on during this time. The group lessons were taught by our City of Kettering professionals, instructor assistants and some of our volunteers. Many participants stayed in the group lessons for two sessions and then moved on to the open skate. Several participants wanted lesson information after skating and did sign up for our next session!!

We had twenty-minute exhibitions on both National Skate Week Clinic days in the middle of the event. The synchronized skating teams dazzled the crowd with their routines. We were lucky enough to have a few solos performed by our City of Kettering Basic Skill skaters. We were also excited to have skaters from the South Dayton Figure Skating Club who performed their solo routines for the exhibition. The crowd seemed eager to watch and cheered during their performances. During our both of our events, we gave away 6 US Figure Skating tote bags, five pairs of US Figure Skating gloves, 10 passes for free admission to open skates, a 50% off coupon for our group lessons and a free six week set of group lessons! Congratulations to our lucky winners.

Flyers Skate Zone
We have held two National Skating Month events and have been having a great time!

Our first event was held the first week in January, before the start of our new Learn to Skate session. We offered free skating lessons to anyone interested. We had a fairly good turn out (despite a heavy winter storm) and ended up getting most of our attendees to sign up for classes! The Colonial Skating Club was instrumental in getting the word out about our event, handing out flyers and posting information on various social media sites. The older skaters were great helpers with our volunteer coaches for a half hour of lesson time. The second half hour, we played games, had a snowball fight (fake snowballs are so much fun!), and used the bubble gun.

Last weekend we hosted our Destination Sochi Team Competition. We were even able to get some of the kids that attended our first event into the mix! Everyone had a great time showing their skills with free skate and exhibitions in between each level. Judges determined who would receive medals (left over from the Colonial Skating Club's annual competition). All participants received the participation award sent to us by US Figure Skating. After the competition was over, we had a pizza party and free skate. The kids and parents enjoyed this event so much, we may try to do it again next year!

Extreme Ice Center - Indian Trail, NC

Extreme Ice Center has several events lined up for on ice sports this season. We had a "Try Skating for Free Day" on Saturday, Jan 18. We had near 100 skaters pass through for lessons on our "Puddle Rink" Surface over a 2 hour period. Upon completing their 20 minute "try it lesson" they attended Public Session to try out their new skills! It was a huge success and a lot of fun had by all. (Photo attached from one of the lessons).

Our next event was the "Skating Dreams" performance to kick off the Games in Sochi. This event was a uge success and was held on Saturday, Feb 1 at the Extreme Ice Center. Paul Wylie hosted the show, which included local Figure Skaters, a Fire Act & Aerialist, Men's National Competitor, Alex Aiken. Proceeds from the show were donated to "The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society". A great kick off to the February portion of NSM, and great visibility to the Figure Skating events!

Muskegon Lakeshore Figure Skating Club

Members from the Muskegon Lakeshore Figure Skating Club performed various skating routines at their Winter Olympic themed figure skating exhibition on Saturday, February 8, 2014. The youngest performer being 4 years old, and another performer, who recently moved, traveled 1,600 miles round trip to be able to perform in the show and be with her friends in the club. The title of the show was Make a Wish on Ice where the club was able to raise $600.00 with the proceeds going to the Make a Wish Foundation of Michigan. The event was also part of National Skating Month and the West Michigan Youth WinterSportsFest. All of the girls did a great job, had fun, and received a standing ovation! Following the exhibition there was a public skate where spectators had a chance to head out onto the ice with the figure skaters from the show.

Rocky Mountain Figure Skating Club
Rocky Mountain Figure Skating Club hosted a National Skating Month Open House on Saturday, January 25, 2014. We had a table with club information, goodies from US Figure Skating and treats for Learn to Skate families. We invited the Learn to Skate students to skate on the public session with skaters from our club. There were over 100 students in Learn to Skate classes and many of them took advantage of skating with our skaters on the public session. RMFSC skaters and Learn to Skate students had a great time.

Penn State FCS

The Penn State Figure Skating Club hosted "It's Great to Skate" during U.S. Figure Skating's National Skating Month celebration. The event was held on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Penn State University's Pegula Ice Arena.

Volunteers from the PSFSC and the Pegula Ice Arena Professional Staff hosted thirty-five invited participants from the Penn State Basic Skills Skating School and junior members of the PSFSC. The hour long event provided a lesson on ice etiquette, group lessons on choreography, game time, and presentations from PSFSC members who recently competed at the Pennsylvania Keystone Games Competition.

Squeals of delight were heard during game time and awe could be seen on our youngest skaters' faces during the program presentations. Many parents expressed their gratitude for the event and said that their child had a good time. The U.S. Figure Skating freebie table was a big hit!
