Memorial Fund


The U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund administers three specialized programs that provide financial assistance to skaters striving to reach their goals both on and off the ice.

Competitive Skaters Assistance Program

The Competitive Skaters Assistance Program (CSAP) is intended to subsidize the training expenses incurred by competitive figure skaters, including:
  • Coaching fees
  • Ice time
  • Equipment
  • Choreography and dance classes
  • Off-ice training
  • Costuming
  • Physical therapy and medical expenses

CSAP awards are available to qualified juvenile, intermediate, novice, junior and senior-level athletes in ladies, men's, pairs and ice dancing, and are based on financial need and competitive skating achievement. Skaters may receive this support throughout their competitive careers, but must re-apply annually.

Eligible Applicants have:

  • Competed at Sectional Championships and placed sixth or higher in the senior, junior or novice competitions; or
  • Received a competition bye to the U.S. Championships; or
  • Competed in the U. S. Figure Skating Championships and placed sixth or higher at the intermediate or juvenile levels.

Academic Scholarship Program

The Academic Scholarship Program (ASP) assists current and former skaters who are enrolled in an accredited college or university and are still actively involved in the sport of figure skating. ASP support is intended to be used to defray educational expenses such as:
  • Tuition and fees
  • Books and supplies

ASP awards are available to current and former figure skaters and synchronized skaters, and are given based on financial need, academic performance and continuing participation in competitive figure skating or U.S. Figure Skating activities. Skaters may receive this support throughout their competitive and academic careers, but must re-apply annually.

Specific Requirements:

  • Figure Skaters: are competing or have competed at the sectional championships at the novice level or higher; or
  • Synchronized Skaters: are competing or have competed at the sectional synchronized skating championships at the senior or collegiate level
  • Former Skaters: are currently participating in volunteer work in skating (i.e. judging, trial judging, officiating, committee member, etc.)
  • Must carry at least six credit hours per semester (undergraduate) or three credit hours per semester (graduate student)
  • Must possess a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or 3.75 or higher on a 5.0 scale

RISE YOUTH ESSAY CONTEST
The RISE Youth Essay Contest provides an opportunity for younger members of U.S. Figure Skating to connect with figure skating's history and receive financial support. Applicants share their personal reflections on the movie RISE, which celebrates the history of American figure skating and documents the impact that the 1961 World Team had on both the sport and the skaters who came after them.

Eligible applicants:

  • Figure Skaters: are currently competing at the pre-preliminary, preliminary, pre-juvenile, or juvenile level or;
  • Synchronized Skaters: are currently competing at the preliminary, pre-juvenile, or juvenile level.
  • Are currently ineligible to receive Memorial Fund CSAP and/or ASP funding (i.e. eligible applicants have not yet finished sixth or higher at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships at the intermediate or juvenile levels).

Entries will be judged in four groups, as determined by competition level, and one grant will be awarded in each group. Awards are based on the ability of the applicant to connect with RISE and clearly and articulately respond to the prompt. Award recipients will receive a monetary grant and their essays will be published in SKATING magazine. Skaters may re-apply for this funding annually until they are no longer skating at an appropriate level.
